The Ancients Return

Character Journals
Cah Jihad Mutu Tahlavain

“Finish him Tahlavain!” yelled Mutu, his arrow trained on his quarry, a bloodied orc priest. The spellcaster had fallen to his knees a moment earlier when Tahlavain had struck him a crippling blow. Around them Cah and Jihad were fighting off the remaining unimaginable half lizard half man creatures that had tried to cut off their escape. Seeing Tahlavain hesitate for an instant Mutu yelled again, “Finish Kalarel now!” The orc glanced over at the bow toting elf with his one good eye. The other was missing, and in its place was a jagged scar left from the sacrifice he had made to his god. The orc let out a low, rasping chuckle and then coughed up a mouthful of blood.

“I’m not Kalarel, you fools! You’ll never defeat the mighty Kalarel!”

“Where’s that little snot Zongo?” spat Tahlavain, referring to the group’s recently acquired goblin companion. He was upset that the goblin had gotten him trapped alone in a room full of bloodthirsty orcs. Luckily, his eladrin companions were able to reach him by teleporting past the portcullis that had been dropped to block their way. Wondering himself where the creature had run off to, Jihad craned his neck to look behind him, the last place he had seen the slippery creature. The sudden movement sent a shock of pain through his body forcing him to grimace.

“I don’t see him,” grunted Jihad, stretching his strained neck. There was a knock from under the large wooden table in the middle of the room. It was quickly followed by the wet sounds of tearing flesh. All four companions were now peering at the muscled corpse of the orc leader which was splayed on the floor, legs spread-eagle, the upper half of his torso hidden in the shadow cast by the table. His body wobbled in rhythm with the cutting sounds. After a few seconds it stopped. A moment later the bulbous green nose of Zongo, highlighted by his beady red eyes, poked out of the darkness.

“First Bite?” he screeched questioningly, dragging the thick, meaty left arm of Darko from under the table. He was eyeing Jihad. As Zongo dragged the limb across the floor towards the eladrin paladin a dark stain of blood trailed behind the recently separated shoulder.

A Decision Point

Cah Jihad Mutu Tahlavain

Tahlavain stood in the shadows, in front of the erect, iron sarcophagus studying the features of the figure carved into its lid. In the faint spillover of golden light from the next room he was just able to make out the sharp cheek bones, the large almond-shaped eyes, the pointed chin: it was almost as if the sarcophagus had been constructed for Tahlavain himself.

“One for each of us, and a few to spare” he mumbled to himself.

Cah’s blade slipped over the shield of his foe. The unholy creature’s skull dropped to the ground, eyes once again lifeless. Seeing victory at hand, Cah urged his companions forward. “Drive on!” he shouted over the din of the battle. The group quickly took the offensive, making short work of the remaining skeletons.

Just then, the awful resounding boom echoed again throughout the chamber. The party tensed, awaiting the next wave. None came.

“Look!” Everyone turned to see Jihad pointing at the head of the chamber. A massive set of gilded doors loomed, the star of Corellon gleaming in the center, beckoning the heroes.

“Cah. Cah! Wake up!” Jihad stood over the body of his fallen comrade. The acid of the crimson ooze had left raw red blotches all over his pale forearms and neck. Small puddles of goo left over from the monster still sizzled on the stone floor around them. “Damnit Cah, come too!”

“I’m glad that’s over. Those k-k-kobolds aren’t your average orc,” said Jihad, stumbling over the unfamiliar name. Stepping out from the cave entrance, into the dimming light of dusk, he sheathed his bloodstained axe.

“The one with the pale green skin was no easier. I fear things have changed for the worse since our kin left Kaeral.”
